Wipeout - The Music is a soundtrack album of various British electronica artists and other European producers from the video game of the same name, released in 1995.

Album[]

Wipeout, released for the Sony PlayStation in 1995, was one of the first video games to incorporate electronic music by non-mainstream, alternative artists into the game. The artwork for the album was made by The Designers Republic in their typical futuristic style, in line with the artwork of the game and its future setting.

The idea for an official soundtrack album, rather than just inserting the PlayStation disc into a standard CD player, was first thought up by Nick Burcombe, the main designer of Wipeout. After playing a game of Super Mario Kart with his own selection of electronic tracks instead of the game's soundtrack, the first idea of the futuristic racer which would become Wipeout came to be. He collected a list of songs that he enjoyed as a raver, and wanted to include them in the game. He originally wanted The Prodigy to write a piece of music for the game, so that a famous name could bring in more customers. When that failed, he brought in Orbital, who made "Wipeout (P.E.T.R.O.L.)".[1] Many record companies at the time also did not understand what Burcombe wanted when he approached them to have music in the game, as nothing like it had been done before.

The soundtrack album had a different track list than the game itself, making use of only a few songs that were present in-game. Aside from tracks 1, 2 and 5, no other tracks from the album appear in the game,[2][3] instead tracks by artist CoLD SToRAGE were used. "Wipeout (P.E.T.R.O.L.)" was already an idea before the game and was finished and recorded especially for it, while "Afro Ride" and "Chemical Beats" are remixes of songs the artists had already recorded. These tracks only appeared on the PAL and Japanese copies for the PlayStation.

The album was released on Vinyl, CD and Cassette in the UK and Australia (CD only in Australia)[4].
