Sol 2 is a racetrack located on the man-made Hawaiian island of Makana. It was first introduced in Wipeout Pure, and reappeared in Wipeout HD.

Description[]

Wipeout Pure[]

4.4km at the top of the world. Don't look down!

Overview[]

The 4.4km Sol 2 circuit lies suspended a full kilometre above Makana. It's one of the fastest tracks in the games due to its high-speed straights and banked corners, but can get tricky at times, particularly with a long open-sided section. A track that demands respect from even the most skilled pilots.

Landmarks[]

Daedalus Institute[]

The centre of anti-gravity research and development the Daedalus Institude marks the start of the Sol 2 track, being an integral part of Sol Platform Alpha.

Talos Sweep[]

Talos Sweep is the open-sided section of the track. It may look simple to navigate on paper, but can catch out even the most experienced pilots. Be especially careful if racing in a pack.

Perdix Loop[]

The Perdix Loop is a series of two corners that weave around Sol Platform Beta. It consists of: Perdix Approach, a tight blind right-hander uphill; a short straight infront of the Perdix Gallery viewing platform; and a long downhill right which is Perdix Retreat. The platform also houses the proactors that control the drift and dip of the station.

Condors Swoop[]

Despite how dreadful it may seem, it's actually not that bad. A good area to get some speed leading into the last few corners on the track.

Track Guide[]

The first corner is a fairly shallow right hander. A little airbrake usage may be necessary for the heavier craft, but it's pretty easy. Hit the speed pad on the right hand side when you exit. The next part is a long open straight. It is sloped over to the left so you'll need to keep your craft under control or risk flying off. There are three speed pads along this part, one on the right, one on the left, and another on the right near the end. The first is near the peak of the slope, hit it and carefully move over to the left hand side. This will allow you to hit the next one before moving back over to the right for the last one. When taking this open section, be very careful not to hit the two raised sections on the side of the track, they will throw you into the air and most likely off the track.

The next corner is quite sharp, if you're going at any decent speed you'll need to sideshift at least once when taking it. The track thins out slightly at the end of the corner, try to line yourself up with the central speed pad. Following this thin straight is another sharp right hander, but is slightly more forgiving than the previous one. Airbrakes will still be required, but no sideshifting unless you're really going some. There are three speed pads in a triangle formation on the exit. If you are slightly over to the left or right, you can hit two. There is another speed pad on the left as you go up the straight. The next corner is a pretty easy right leading into a left curve. If you can get onto the inside for the right turn, you can hit a speed pad.

The final turn is a quite sharp right which immediately follows the left curve. The line through here is pretty tricky to follow especially as you can't see the last corner until the very last second. As soon as you enter it, immediately slam on the right airbrake and you may need to sideshift as well. The last straight has two speed pads in the middle of the track. Hit one and then boost over the line.

Trivia[]

  • In Wipeout HD, the background of the track shows a mountain range surrounding it. It is unknown why it is there, but it makes no sense as Sol 2 is supposed to be located above the island of Makana.
  • Chronologically, the track is an homage to the original Sol from the AGRC era.
    • The original Sol was raced in the 2050 season of the AGRC. It is widely possible that Sol 2 was created as the 150th anniversary of the original, which implies that this track was completed in 2200.
