Wipeout Central

Several years after their release, various Wipeout games have had third-party mods.[1] Some of these mods may serve as some kind of unofficial expansions, with the addition of content and features not normally available in the base game, even fixes made to the base game.

Wipeout[]

In April of 2022, the source for the ATI Rage port of Wipeout was leaked, enabling anyone (with the skill) to compile and run the game on PC and other hardware. This led to two significant remakes of the game, both of which fixed bugs present in the PC port, uncapped the screen resolution and frame rate, added support for modern controllers, and introduced quality of life features.

WipEout Rewrite by PhobosLabs is a complete rewrite of the game, optimizing 40,000 lines of original source code into 7,000.[2] The rewrite can be played in a browser via WebAssembly,[3] and the source code is open on GitHub,[4] allowing anyone to compile for any platform and contribute fixes. This version improves rendering and adds visual display options, including UI scaling. There are minor gameplay differences, which have largely been resolved since release. The rewrite is the basis for the Dreamcast port created by jnmartin84. Last updated June 2025.

WipEout Phantom Edition, also available on Github, is another enhanced version of the original.[5] The game notably adds multiple track collision modes - Modern, based on BallisticNG; Classic; based on Wipeout 2097; and Legacy, a preservation of WipEout's original collision behavior. The game also backports the inherited track-to-ship lighting of Wipeout 2097, and adds particle effects for wall scrapes and collisions. Phantom Edition is closed source, and was last updated in February 2024.

Wipeout Pure[]

It is possible to convert DLC packs between different regions for Wipeout Pure since 2021, allowing them to be used in the game regardless of regional version.[6] In order to do so, CWCheat via a CFW mod or the PPSSPP emulator must be used to disable the signature check, a feature that prevents unofficial DLC from loading at game startup.

Wipeout Pulse[]

The official Wipeout Pulse website allowed players to create custom skins for their ships and import them into the game, but after the site went down, the tool was lost. An unofficial/fan-made ship skin editor named "shipedit" (or "Pulse Ship Skin Editor") was developed in 2021 by Thomas Perl.[7][8]

Wipeout Portable Collection[]

This unofficial compilation was released on 16 January 2025, containing Wipeout Pure and Wipeout Pulse released on the PlayStation Portable and running enhanced versions of the mods. Both games are available and can be selected from a custom-made interface, and after launching a game the other one can be accessed in the menu Options in Wipeout Pure/Extras in Wipeout Pulse.

The mod requires a PlayStation Portable running CFW and also works on PPSSPP. It is also compatible with a modded PlayStation Vita with Adrenaline installed.

Wipeout Pure[]

The "Special Edition" mod for Wipeout Pure was first released on 22 February 2022, featuring every previously-released downloadable content, including the region-exclusive content packs, as well as the ability to race every track in the game in Zone mode. Before its release, a similar mod prototype named “EX” by the same author was released on 12 August 2021, requiring the installation of all DLC tracks in order to play them in Zone mode.

Changes were also made to the base game, such as the addition of the Japanese language setting, the restoration of the thrust bar, the Sinucit start position bug and the Triakis deceleration glitch fixed. A number of custom DLC is available, such as custom menu skins inspired by the earlier Wipeout games and the WipeoutZone website, a pack that increases the AI difficulty, another one that replaces all ships with their VR variant from the Classic League, promotional music/ships/skins/tracks packs, and so on.

Wipeout Pulse[]

Originally released as "FX350 Edition", this mod for Wipeout Pulse was first released on 30 August 2021, containing all four official downloadable content packs. This mod attempted to emulate the FX350 League by adding all 32 tracks from Wipeout Pure. It was later updated as "Future Edition" on 8 September 2024.

The mod increases the Zone/Kills target limits in the Racebox, restores the Head to Head and Eliminator game modes in multiplayer and has various front end improvements. Custom DLC are also available, such as a pack that makes 5 tracks available in Zone (not normally playable in that game mode), another one that reduces the size of the HUD, a new AI difficulty that replaces the Hard difficulty and is significantly more challenging (referred to as "Elite"), and more.

There are two versions available, a normal version and an alternative one that is able to run the tracks from Wipeout Pure (using a DLC pack). The Quake weapon is disabled in the alternative version due to compatibility problems with the previous game's tracks.

Wipeout 2048[]

While there are no major ROM hacks for Wipeout 2048, there is a patching program called Firestar[9], which can install specialized .FSTAR packages[10] containing smaller mods. These mods are somewhat limited compared to mods for the PSP titles in that they cannot modify executable code (and the tools to import 2048 models and tracks seem to be underdeveloped).

Some example mods can be found in the Firestar manual, including a patch to decrease the grinding required to level up in single-player mode, custom music playlists, and custom ship liveries. All mods are online-compatible.

Wipeout HD Fury uses the same package format and engine as Wipeout 2048[11], meaning Firestar could be used to pack and install mods for HD Fury, although it is not officially supported.
