Boost Start is a gameplay technique that, when executed correctly, will give the ship a significant speed boost from a standstill, allowing for an early advantage at the start of the race. This is a fundamental piloting technique in Wipeout, having first appeared in the first game.
Activation[]
Up until Wipeout 3, players have to manually adjust their thrust during the race start countdown in order to perform a boost start, similar to how racing drivers in real life adjust their throttle from a standing start. The precise thrust power required for a boost start depends greatly on the speed class and the ship's Thrust rating.
From Wipeout Fusion onwards, the method of performing a boost start has been simplified, making it much easier to execute. Players are required to press the thrust function in a timely manner. There are usually cues during the race start countdown, which players have to anticipate in order to be able to execute a boost start. The strength of the boost start is determined by the ship's Thrust rating – those with higher stats tend to launch faster from a standstill compared to those with lower stats.
Trivia[]
- The AGRC-era Pir-hana Prototype had the Auto-Acceleration feature to make up for its lack of acceleration module. Because of this, the boost start could not be performed on this ship.
